FAA Newsletter - May 15th 2008

Dear Members,

Press Conference:  this Saturday 17th May, we are organising a press conference at Ta’ Fgieni, Attard, an open area in between Scott’s Supermarket and the back wall of Villa Bologna (see map below). As you know, our group feels very strongly that certain aspects of the Local Plans, which were revised and ratified in August 2006 are very damaging to our communities. In certain cases the Local Plans have raised building heights to what we feel are unacceptable levels, while in other cases agricultural land or Public Open Areas, were re-zoned to permit building within them.

In January 2007 FAA opened a court case challenging the illegality of these Local Plans along with the Rationalisation plans, but as such court proceedings tend to be very slow, we are also tackling individual areas where we feel the damage is greatest.  One of these areas of concern is Attard’s pjazza Fgieni, which had been scheduled as a Public Open Area and subsequently re-zoned as a development area. This will obviously rob the residents of the public garden they have been pressing for, and indeed promised for all these years.  We have been holding meetings with MEPA and members of the Local Council and, having concluded that there are firm planning grounds for a review of the Local Plans to immediately commence, we shall be requesting it officially this Saturday.

While we appreciate that this is may not be an issue that affects you directly, we feel that the safeguarding of public open spaces in our increasingly built-up towns is a concern for all of us, and invite you to join us at Ta’ Fgieni next Saturday at 11am.  The event is only expected to last half an hour.

Art Exhibition

The C.S. Lawrence ‘Synergy’ Art Exhibition taking place at the Sinclair Stevenson art Gallery in Gozo has been a great success. The Opening was very well attended with viewers remarking the artist’s outstanding mastery of a wide range of subjects and styles.  The Gozitan landscapes were a hit due to their impressionistic style and warm vibrant colours, revealing the artist’s affinity to her Maltese roots. Caroline Lawrence’s forte, portrait and figurative works were also highly admired, with their textural collages adding depth to the intriguing and profound facial expressions.

Proceeds from C.S. Lawrence’s exhibition are going to Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, the Friends of the Sick and Elderly and Oasi, and the good news is that the exhibition is being extended for another weekend so we do urge you to drop in if you are in Gozo as it’s a really wonderful artistic treat.

The event is now open to the public on May 17,18, 24 & 25 from 10:00-12:30 and 16.30-19.00, at the SINCLAIR STEVENSON GALLERY at 59, Trux Street, Gharb, Gozo, but do phone to visit at other times on 21 56 2074.

Click here to download the map of Gharb for directions.

Museums Week:  Our final piece of news is that as of this Saturday, ICOM, the international organisation for museum professionals is celebrating Museums day, with a packed programme of museums visits with a difference.  We are attaching their programme below for your guidance as we are sure it’s an initiative you and your families would enjoy.

Best regards to all,

The FAA Committee
